Florida Mountains Tour

Interest Servey

We are assessing interest in a hiking tour of the Florida Mountains. Filling out this form does not commit you to anything.

1. Would you be interested in a tour of the Florida Mountains, south of Rockhound State Park?

2. Various tours could be considered. Some are Tour and History of the Movements of the Eastern Chiricahua Apache into and out of the Florida Mountains for a century or more. Includes Military History, as well.

3. Tours of the Floridas during the "wild flower" season -- i.e., Mid February - mid April.

4. Photography Tour

9. Hiking of Floridas, travel at your own risk:

*All hikes would require a minimum of hiking boots (no Tevas, flip flops, tennis shoes); day pack with: Poncho; Sun Screen; @ least two quarts of water; first aid items you choose; extra shirt and pants in case of rain (not likely); long pants; preferably long shirt, if off road hiking; thick socks; hat; lunch items, snacks, etc., of hiker's choice. Road hiking in Floridas would be "easy" but hiking farther south in Floridas would be "moderately strenuous;" "Strenuous" would be off road, no trails, sometimes steep to very steep climbing & hiking. Rattlesnakes, Africanized Bees, Scorpions, Tarantulas, slides on rock talus, all kinds of possible "encounters" with cacti: Prickly Pear, Cholla; Century Agave; Shin Daggers (Spanish Daggers); Spanish Bayonet; Ocotillo; Sotol Cactus; Acacia; Catclaw; Mesquite; Hedgehog; Barrel. NO harvesting of cacti is allowed. We do not favor ATV use by those unitiated into the customs of remaining ONLY on roads. The Floridas are "Wilderness Study Area," and as such, off road travel in ATVs is prohibited.

Anyone violating that principle will be asked to leave the group if they tow ATVs along the tour. Visitors to the Deming Area should remember altitude differences, as well as the dry heat, if they have any medical problems. They should also know that being 4 or 6 miles down the Floridas, would require emergency services that might cost them dearly if they became ill because of pre-existing conditions. Injuries on Moderate to Strenuous, off road hikes, are truly "travel at your own risk," and might require helicopter evacuation, at tourista's expense. The Tour Team will carry a side arm, but does not believe in unsupported killing of rattle snakes. No side arms would be allowed for touristas.

10. Tour and history of Ranching in Deming/Columbus/Cooke's Range Area.

11. Tour beginning near American-Mexican Border @ Columbus and following roughly the route taken by the Apache, Ulzana, north, to the Lake Valley Area. Long day. 10 - 12 hours, minimum, with several stops @ general locations of Apache-American fire fights. Includes the former Missouri Cattle Company homestead and secondary ranch house; Copper Kettle Caņon area; Byers Springs; Spring Caņon; Ft. Cummings; Lake Valley and associated area. $95.00 per person, minimum of 10 customers, with 3 week advance notice. Special coordination with Steelhorse Adventures.

12. A complete circumnavigation of the Florida Mountains is a minimum of 7 - 8 hours, leaving Rockhound State Park, and returning thereto. The roads in the Floridas can be VERY rugged, and provide jostling and bouncing around. This is also an excellent way to SEE the Floridas, but that's the trade off.
